Welcome our generically named blog...we are so official. I'm still working on getting the calendar up and running, but I promise it will be there soon! Also, we still need a name and a mission statement. Feel free to toss out name ideas on here...a few things I came up with today that we can build off of
-Philabuntu (a play off of Philadelphia and Ubuntu (which is one of my favorite words and is a South African term that refers to the interconnectedness of people...it means "I am because you are")

PHILADELPHIA ZOO VOLUNTEER DAY - April 12 (Easter)
A few of us who don't have Easter plans are going to volunteer to help with the Egg Hunt and other activitiies. The shifts are 8:30-12:30 and 12:30-3:30. Let me know if you want to join!

From 9-1 at 10th and Lombard. Becky, Nat and I are going to try to go in the morning from 9-10.

MS WALK FUNDRAISER/EXCUSE TO PARTY-April 24
On May 3, Becky will be participating in the MS Walk. Our friend Lance is hosting a fundraiser at his house in Manayunk on Friday April 24 if you want to help support Becky and her team. Everyone is invited!
Community Day in West Philly, April 25, 12:30-5pm - Contact Lezlie to volunteer
Tom O'Hagan Benefit May 2, 5-9pm
Lezlie's dad and his friends are running this benefit for a very close family friend. He had a stroke and is now confined to a wheel chair. He had lost his job just before the stroke so he had no medical insurance to pay for his nearly 6-month stay in the hospital/rehab facility. The money will go towards his medical expenses as well as the cost to make his home accessible for a wheel chair. Lezlie is not going to the benefit but just going to buy a ticket (which I believe is $30).
We also talked about donating our first months dues ($15 each at our next meeting) to this group: www.solarcookerproject.org. It is a great organization that is helping women and girls in Africa. These women risk getting raped every time they walk alone to the community cooking areas, so these simple tools provide them with a few to cook food, boil water and avoid harm. Check it out and let me know if everyone is on board.
My big concern right now is hunger. On May 3, I'll be doing the Walk for Hunger. We also talked about doing a can drive to donate to Philabundance. Sarah is hosting a party on April 18 which we discussed using as a collection as well...Sarah, is this still cool?
Also, Natalie is looking into volunteering to help with local races. Lex is finding out details about sending care packages to her grandmother's organization in Liberia.
Alison, do you still need more books?
I know this seems like a lot of different things going on at once, but if we all just pick the things that we are most interested in I think its a great way to support each other!
